In most camps there were elderly women known for the wisdom they possessed. In this piece the artist is trying to depict that person as she continues her search for wisdom. The buffalo represented wisdom to the Native American, therefore the skull is used as part of the piece.
From where does wisdom come? Why do some seem to grow in it while others only search in vain? Could it be that many only search the shallow areas instead of reaching upward?
Hopefully through this piece the viewer can appreciate the old woman’s continued search despite her age.
In understanding the importance of her quest of wisdom and from where it comes, hopefully will encourage the viewer to believe it’s truly worth searching for.
